10 weeks, learning different compositional techniques

Taught by Carl Randall, the course covered multiple techniques to pieces together, prepare and hone a composition ready for painting.

Techniques included:

  • using maquettes (creating sets/models)

  • using film stills (and playing with perspective via ratios)

  • collage

  • use of shapes and layered paper cuttings to symbolise key elements

  • creating shapes and directional focus with the positioning of figures

  • sketching from life, to a brief

  • exaggerating and realigning angles

  • ‘zooming in and out’ by iterating sketches on specific areas of a composition and on a whole composition to generate multiple options for selection
